The Holiday World RV Story


In the early ‘80s, Dick Klinger, owner of the Holiday Rambler (HR) manufacturing company, Utilimaster, Stag-Parkway RV parts distribution,  and other RV companies acquired an RV dealership in Mesquite, Texas. He partnered with JW Mayo to form Holiday World RV Centers (HWRVC). The goal was to develop a chain of company owned dealerships with a focus on promoting, selling, and servicing the Holiday Rambler brands in under served markets nation wide. 

In 1985, Mayo acquired two small dealerships in Houston. They continued to acquire dealerships over the next few years in Massachusetts, Florida, New Mexico, Texas, Indiana, Washington, Oregon, and California. At their height, HR owned and operated 14 stores. 

In 1986, Klinger sold HR, HWRVC, and associated companies to Harley Davidson as they broadened their recreational holdings. Harley continued to own and manage HR and HWRVC through the early ‘90s until they sold the companies to Monaco Coach in March 1996. 

Michael Peay, managing partner of Holiday World and its affiliates, joined HWRVC in February 1993 as the manager of the two Houston dealerships. In 1996 when the dealerships were sold to Monaco Coach, Michael recognized the opportunity to acquire the Houston dealerships and formed a partnership to form Holiday World of Houston. The purchase of the stores was consummated in September 1996. 

The two Houston dealerships were located on less than four acres combined. Recognizing the increasing need for RV service and future growth, the partnership purchased 57 acres in 1999 in Katy, Texas where the Katy dealership is now located. The new state of the art facility was opened in April 2000. 

An opportunity arose in 2004 to acquire a dealership in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The dealership now known as Holiday World of Las Cruces is located on I-10 in southern New Mexico, about 40 miles north of El Paso, Texas. This dealership serves the southern New Mexico and El Paso markets and serves as an oasis for RV travelers in need of service on their journey west to NM, AZ, and CA. 

In 2007, the south Houston dealership was relocated to an 8 acre facility in League City, Texas. This facility provides more space for sales inventory, an indoor showroom, service unit parking and 10 large service bays for almost any type of RV service work to be done for our customers. 

The downturn in the economy put pressure on the RV Industry in 2008 and 2009. Many RV manufacturers and dealers went out of business during this tough time. The changes also provided new opportunities for dealerships with disciplined processes and conservative management.  In 2010 the Holiday World of Dallas dealership was acquired to represent the Keystone brands of towable products in Mesquite, Texas. 

During this same time property was purchased in Willis, Texas for future development of a dealership north of Houston. The 32 acre Willis facility was opened in 2014 and has quickly grown to serve the north Houston, The Woodlands, and surrounding communities. Our staff in Willis was developed and promoted from other dealerships in the Houston market. 

15 acres were purchased on I-35W in Alvarado, Texas, about 20 miles south of Ft. Worth, to build a new facility. The dealership was opened in January 2017 to serve all the communities west and south of DFW. Along with the Keystone brand towable RVs, motorhome brands continue to be added to further serve our RV customers in the area. 

As of April 2017, we operate 6 Holiday World RV dealerships located on 127 acres, with 85 indoor service bays, $55 million in unit inventory, $1.5 million in parts inventory, and over 300 enthusiastic employees all dedicated to serving our customers.

Lucky 13! Congrats to Mo Wiley: Top Gun!

Congrats to Mo Wiley and his lucky 13 to be Holiday Worlds Top Gun sales person of the month.  Mo beat out over 25 other sales professionals to have the top spot in March.

Mo’s secret to his success: Customer satisfaction. Understanding the needs of customers and using the extensive brand selection at Holiday World to meet the demands of those customers.

Congratulations to the Holiday World organization and Alvarado team for the opening of our 6th location.  Though the efforts of sweat equity leadership and teamwork the Holiday World of Alvarado location is now open for business.

You only live once #YOLO #2017prosper

As I celebrate the holidays with my family and friends, as usual the topic of New Year’s resolutions came up.  And although I am a big fan of self-improvement, I often find that New Year’s resolutions are delusions of grandeur instead of achievable goals.  That being said I set a few on myself, including healthier, eating breakfast, spending less time on “screens”, and drinking more water. Screens is hard since that is how I make a living!!

Upon reflecting on our time at HolidayWorld, we also starting thinking about what New Year’s resolutions we should take on, what we really need to make stick in 2017.  Here is one that I came up as the most important: live.

Making living the most important thing in your Be humbled. Don’t take anything for granted. If there is something that you want to do. Then get it done. Don’t wait. Many of my childhood heroes left us in 2016 and made me ponder on why they influenced me.  And how they inspire me today to live the life that makes me the happiest.

So what is your definition of living?  Do you want to make memories with your friends and family?  Maybe go camping? Living the #RVlife? Then do it!!!  Never been camping? Never been in a motorhome? Then give it a try. It could help you define life and make those special times happen.
